Fresh off a last-second double-overtime victory over Florida Gulf Coast University, FIU men’s soccer was named the NCAA Soccer Men’s Team of the Week on Thursday.
The team, which is ranked 14th in the NCAA’s ranking system, is undefeated with a record of 7-0-3. The win over FGCU was a 4-3 comeback victory, as Marvin Hezel scored in stoppage time to equalize the match, and Imaculate-LaSalle product Alessandro Campoy scored with eight second remaining in extra time to claim the victory.
“The team responded well tonight, going down early, coming back and playing a man down,” FIU Head Coach Kevin Nylen said. “The players showed a lot of character against a very good opponent this evening. You can not script how the game played out and finished.”
FIU’s next match will take place Saturday, when they travel to Columbia to play South Carolina in a Conference USA matchup (South Carolina is a member of the Southeastern Conference in most sports, but the SEC does not sponsor men’s soccer. USC is an affiliate member of the C-USA).
