Another Dade Derby as The Miami FC 2 and FC Miami City to face off in U.S. Open Cup

After receiving permission from the United States Soccer Federation to participate in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, The Miami FC 2 and FC Miami City of the Premier Development League will square off in a “play-in” cup match.

It will be the first time these two teams have ever faced off, either in an official match or an exhibition. FC Miami City, an affiliate of Paris Saint-Germain, qualified for the cup by finishing as one of the PDL’s “Top 21” finishers last season.

Miami City plays its home games at Tropical Park, but it’s not yet known what date, time or location may be for the matchup. It has right of first refusal to host, so ultimately The Miami FC 2 could be responsible for providing the venue.

It could prove to be an unfortunate break for FC Miami City, which was one of two Miami-Dade teams potentially facing this match. Miami United FC was the other team in the draw.

Around the country

As for the other former NASL squads who received this play-in opportunity, New York Cosmos B was drawn to face two-time U.S. Open Cup winners Brooklyn Italians SC, while Jacksonville Armada FC will face The Villages SC.

Dates, times and venues are not expected to be finalized until late in the week.
