Michael Lahoud, former captain of The Miami FC, announces he is leaving club

Michael Lahoud, the Sierra Leonean footballer who came to The Miami FC in May 2016 as a stabilizing force for a foundering side and became its captain, announced Tuesday night that he is leaving the club.

Before Lahoud’s arrival, Miami FC was struggling to a winless record at the bottom of the North American Soccer League. In his debut, the club won its first game, defeating Edmonton at home 1-0.

While the spring season ended without any more victories, it was Lahoud — along with a few other signings — that nearly lead a miraculous turnaround into the NASL playoffs.

Season of success

The 2017 season was the pinnacle of South Florida soccer in this decade, with Miami FC defeating two Major League Soccer sides en route to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals. Additionally, the club claimed the NASL spring and fall regular-season titles.

Lahoud quickly became a fan favorite, eager to engage with supporters in the Dade Brigade on and off the pitch. He generally played in a midfield role, but occasionally contributed in defense.

Lahoud made multiple preseason appearances for The Miami FC 2, but had not appeared in the final two preseason games. It is not known where Lahoud will play next, although it is believed at least one United Soccer League side has interest in his services.
