The 68th FIFA Congress 2018 took place in Moscow on Thursday, and after presentations from Morocco and the United 2026 bid featruing the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, the United bid was selected to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
While the vote wasn’t a surprise, there had been some groundswell of support for the Morocco bid over the last few months.
Now, the Bid Committee has the chore of whittling down the list of 23 potential host cities to 16. Three will be located in Canada and three in Mexico, so that leaves 17 cities in the U.S. that will need to be cut to 10.
Florida has two potential host cities (Miami and Orlando), and local and federal officials have been working to support their candidacy. Miami is believed to be favored to host matches, including a quarterfinal matchup and possibly the third-place game.
