FIU men’s soccer grabbed its first win of the season on Friday, surviving a lengthy delay and an early goal from Marshall Thundering Herd forward Vinicius Fernandes to win 2-1.
Lightning held up kickoff in Huntington, West Virginia for more than 90 minutes. The delayed start might have impacted the Panthers. Within six minutes, Fernandes was able to converted an opportunity off an FIU turnover, beating FIU keeper Hugo Fauroux and putting Marshall on top.
Santiago Patino, a Hermann Trophy candidate, saved the Panthers from falling to 0-4. His first goal came in the 39th minute, when Andrew Booth knocked a ball to Patino’s right foot.
In overtime, the Panthers quickly ended things. In the second minute, Inigo Sagarduy provided servicde to Patino, and Patino again beat Paulo Pita.
“It’s great to start the conference season with a win on the road,” Patino told FIUSports.com after the match. “I’m glad that I could contribute with two goals, but it was a great effort from everyone to get the win.”
Miami women’s soccer
The Miami Hurricanes women’s soccer team registered its first tie of the season Friday night, then promptly earned its second tie the next time on the pitch.
Miami traveled to Jacksonville on Friday night, and put up a dominant statistic performance. Miami outshot the Dolphins 26-11 and had five more corner kicks. However, it was Jacksonville that had the first goal of the match, with Zoe Zinis sending in a ball off a free kick to Kylie McCue. McCue headed it in to give the Dolphins the lead.
It wasn’t until the 88th minute that the Hurricanes equalized. Defender Bayleigh Chaviers, who had five shots on the night and was a havoc for Jacksonville on both ends, was pulled down in the box. Senior Jamie Brunworth stepped up and knocked in the penalty, sending the game to overtime.
On Sunday, it was another slow start against Stetson in Deland. Jamie Brunworth got her second goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Emily Lamas pulled the Hatters back into the match in the 79th minute, and again the Hurricanes faced an uneventful extra period.
FIU women’s soccer
The Panthers continued their season-opening slump over the weekend, dropping two games to Texas Tech (6-0) and SMU (5-2). The two goals against the Mustangs were the most they’ve scored this season, and the first goal scored since a 4-1 loss to Miami on Aug. 19.
