BREAKING: Inter Miami CF intends to play first two Major League Soccer seasons at renovated Lockhart Stadium

Inter Miami CF managing owner Jorge Mas confirmed in a press conference Thursday that the team intends to play its first two Major League Soccer seasons at a stadium it would build at the current site of Lockhart Stadium.

The club has previously announced its intention to build the team’s youth academy at the site, as well as rebuilding Lockhart Stadium to host a USL reserve side. However, this is the first time the team has confirmed it plans to play any MLS games at the site, as well as a confirmation of where the team would like to play before its stadium in Miami-Dade County is completed.

This is the latest twist in a half-decade-long saga related to the team and where it will play. Possible temporary sites included Hard Rock Stadium, Marlins Park and FIU Stadium. However, each venue had unique challenges in making it a possibility for the length of the MLS season. 

In October 2018, Magic City Soccer contributor Lee Ifans had the following to say about Lockhart serving as a temporary venue:

It would be a great gesture to restore this stadium and hand it back to the community, that would be a big PR win. It could even be retained for a USL affiliate or B team or even an NWSL team. Its soccer heritage brings something to the table that no other venue can.
