Inter Miami CF doomed in 10 chaotic minutes by DC United, fall to 0-2

For 50 minutes Saturday, Inter Miami CF seemed poised to claim its first Major League Soccer victory. An early Rodolfo Pizarro goal, the first in the club’s history, was the cap of an early offensive blitz and reflected the dominance we would see from the team in the first half.

But one moment proved to be a harbinger of doom for the RosaNegra, taking them from 2-0 up to down 2-1 and a man within 10 minutes.

The wait for an inaugural point continues. Inter Miami fell at the hands of DC United Saturday, 2-1.

The Pizarro goal, which came just two minutes after kickoff, was sparked by a turnover in midfield. Robbie Robinson, the No. 1 pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft last year, won the ball and made a stellar run. He found Lewis Morgan to his right, who sent the low cross in to the foot of Pizarro.

The Undoing

While the goal is the moment that will be etched in the record books, arguably the more memorable moment came in the 51st minute. Morgan appeared to score the goal that likely would have put the tie away. Instead, VAR of the goal showed that Miami defender Roman Torres handled the ball, disallowing the goal and earning Torres the club’s first red card. Things went from bad to worse in the 59th minute, when Miami defender Victor Ulloa fouled D.C.’s Edison Flores in the box, leading to a Yamil Asad penalty. Two minutes later, D.C. United defender Frederic Brillant found a rebound off Inter Miami CF keeper Luis Robles and tucked it away for a lead that would not be relinquished.

“We deserve more than what the record of these two games may reflect,” Inter Miami CF manager Diego Alonso said after the game. “We played better than last week; our first half was great. Those few minutes changed the game but even with 10 guys, we kept pushing until the end.”
