Previewing The Match: Inter Miami v Philadelphia Union

The #MLSisBack tournament continues this evening with the second matchday for Group A. Inter Miami are currently behind the 8-ball if they wish to qualify for the knockout rounds of the tournament. Following Inter’s heartbreaking loss to a last minute goal to Orlando’s Nani, the climb got harder with the Philadelphia Union besting NYCFC on a goal by Weston’s Alejandro Bedoya. If Inter ever needed their first win, it’s tonight.

The Union have not fared much better than Inter, earning only a point in their two fixtures prior to the Covid-19 stoppage. Philadelphia boasts a strong squad of names you’re familiar with like Andre Blake, Gediom Zelalem, Ilsinho, not including the aforementioned Bedoya. Being able to turn a strong defense into a quick counter-attack has been a staple of the Union’s game for years.

Keys to an Inter Miami Victory

Inter Miami has been plagued by poor defending in each of their matches early on. In fairness to the pink & white, they can’t seem to catch a break in attacking firepower. Between Carlos Vela, Yamil Asad, and Nani; Inter defenders will finally catch a break when it comes to their opponent’s front line. Closing off Bedoya’s outlets is the key to victory tonight for Inter.

Inter has to use a strong defensive effort in order to spring Agudelo loose upfront yet again. Better yet, Miami could use Rodolfo Pizarro for more than limited action to boost a potent attack. That attack is made even more powerful by wingers Matias Pellegrini and Lewis Morgan. Morgan should cause problems for Philadelphia down the right flank all night and will certainly be a secondary key should the middle of the field be shut down by the Union.

Prediction

Miami was robbed of points in their last outing. Diego Alonso has proven that Inter has the tactics necessary to complete in matches at the MLS level. Alonso now needs his roster to live up to their expectations. Philadelphia is the weakest opponent Miami has faced so far and a victory is needed more than anything. The stars will align tonight for Inter and “La Familia” will get to celebrate their first victory.
