If the 2026 FIFA World Cup does come to the United States, Miami-Dade County will play a prominent part in it, as South Florida was included as one of the hosts venues for the U.S. Soccer Federation and the “United Bid” which also includes Canada and Mexico.
Just in case you can’t access the main website, you can watch the Miami MLS announcement here!
Miami Fusion F.C. — which was founded in 2013 and won the National Premier Soccer League’s Sunshine Conference in 2017 — has folded, per a source close to the conference.
Another day down, another day closer to a significant moment for soccer fans of Miami-Dade County.
“Fútbol Miami MLS” released a website Friday with a countdown clock to a “major soccer announcement” on Monday at noon. On the website, a link was also available to the Adrienne Arsht Center’s website, where tickets were made available for this announcement. (UPDATE: Tickets for the event have sold out).
Paul Dalglish, the former manager of Austin Aztex of the Premier Development League and Ottawa Fury FC, has been named as the second manager of The Miami FC.
It has been almost four years since David Beckham first publicly appeared on the South Florida scene with a pledge that he would bring Major League Soccer to South Florida. 1,448 days. 34,752 hours. No Miami MLS.
A long time.
It appears that the “countup” clock many in the Miami-Dade soccer community may finally stop ticking.
After weeks of positive movement and reports that the long-awaited announcement was drawing near, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday that the Miami MLS ownership group consisting of Beckham, Marcelo Claure, Simon Fuller, and Jorge and Jose Mas would formally launch its team on Monday.
The Miami FC made history Saturday night, as the team defeated FC Edmonton 2-1 to claim the NASL Fall Season title. The team becomes the first squad to win the Spring and Fall title of the North American Soccer League in the same year.
It wasn’t easy, as the club had to outlast a valiant effort by the Canadian club. Not only that, but outer bands of Tropical Storm Philippe made the conditions beyond wet. However, two goals by Kwadwo Poku broke the league’s team season scoring record (61) and sealed all three points. A loss by San Francisco Deltas to Jacksonville Armada made the points unnecessary for the title, but the team will certainly take the win as they head into the The Championship semifinal.
Not only that, the win gave The Miami FC the NASL record for points in a season (69).
The squad now waits for the conclusion of games on Sunday, as they will either host New York Cosmos or North Carolina FC on Nov. 5 at 5 pm.
It has been a season of consequence for the FIU men’s soccer team. A two-time champion at the Division II level and a national runner-up in Division I in 1996, the program does know success. However, not since the mid-1990s has FIU reached the heights it’s reaching in 2017.
Earlier this week, the program was ranked No. 8 in the NCAA’s latest United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll. It is the highest raking for the program since the conclusion of the 1996 season. The team didn’t rest on its laurels, taking the field and defeating conference rival Old Dominion 3-1 to remain unbeaten on the season.
One of the underdiscussed aspects of soccer management in America recently (in fairness, there has been a lot to talk about) has to deal with the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. One of the major problems with the competition is the difficulty amateur clubs have navigating it. No, it’s not related to the challenge posed by professional competition. The issue is funding for long trips. And a local team — FC Kendall — is facing that issue head-on this week.
Just last week, it was learned that the United States Soccer Federation will offer financial assistance to clubs in the open division amateur qualifying tournament who have to make road trips longer than six hours. However, it likely won’t be enough for small amateur clubs facing a multi-state journey.
FC Kendall of the APSL is taking a direct approach to the problem. Earlier today, it posted a campaign to GoFundMe entitled “Help FC Kendall get To Nashville!“
Fresh off a last-second double-overtime victory over Florida Gulf Coast University, FIU men’s soccer was named the NCAA Soccer Men’s Team of the Week on Thursday.
