Inter Miami CF match against Atlanta United postponed amid player protests of shooting by police

Inter Miami CF game postponed.

Tonight’s Inter Miami CF match against Atlanta United FC at Inter Miami CF Stadium in Fort Lauderdale has been postponed in response to player protests sweeping the country.

The postponement was the first in Major League Soccer. A match between Nashville SC and Orlando City SC scheduled for 7:30 p.m. kicked off as scheduled. The Inter match was scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff.

“Black Players for Change asked us not to play, and I think at that point we respect them and we have to respect why we wear these [Black Lives Matter] shirts,” Inter Miami CF defender A.J. DeLaGarza told Inter Miami CF’s Kaylyn Kyle on the team’s broadcast after the match. “And that’s to make a change and to have our voices heard.”

The announcement was just the latest in a turbulent day in the world of sports, kicked off by the Milwaukee Bucks’ wildcat strike of its NBA Playoffs game against the Orlando Magic, originally scheduled for 4 p.m. The Bucks’ move was prompted by the shooting of Jacob Blake by Kenosha, Wis. police officer Rusten Sheskey in the back seven times.

“Athletes have a huge platform, and we have to use that right now,” DeLaGarza said.

Inter Miami Finally Get Their Home Opener Against Orlando City

Today is the day that MLS fans in South Florida have been waiting a lifetime for. Inter Miami CF is finally going to get its long awaited home opener. In true 2020 fashion, one massive element will be missing from tonight’s game. Supporters will not be allowed in the stadium given the pandemic that is still raging in the tri-county area. Fans or no fans, this match is of massive importance for Miami after their month long layoff.

Blaise Matuidi joins Inter Miami from Juventus, doesn’t use Designated Player spot

Inter Miami CF announced Thursday that it was acquiring Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi on a free transfer, signing the player with Targeted Allocation Money.

Inter Miami CF announced Thursday that it had signed French midfielder Blaise Matuidi, last of Juventus. This marks the first significant signing of a high-profile player from Europe for the club.

Perhaps most notably, Inter Miami was able to acquire Matuidi with Targeted Allocation Money. This means that the club retains its third Designated Player spot (the first two used on Rodolfo Pizarro and Matias Pellegrini). The club could go into the market again and sign another high-profile player.

Inter Miami CF Lose To NYCFC 1-0, Eliminated From #MLSisBack Tournament

No one ever wants to leave Walt Disney World, but Inter Miami CF’s stay in the Major League Soccer bubble at the resort was disappointingly short. Miami was not given many favors in its group draw, forced into an opening fixture with Orlando City SC followed by a date with the Philadelphia Union. The club’s final match saw it fighting for its tournament lives against NYCFC.

Coming into the match, both teams were seeking their first win. NYCFC were conceding more goals than Miami. Unfortunately, a 63rd minute goal would seal Miami’s fate.

The #MLSisBack tournament continues this evening with the second matchday for Group A. Inter Miami are currently behind the 8-ball if they wish to qualify for the knockout rounds of the tournament. Following Inter’s heartbreaking loss to a last minute goal to Orlando’s Nani, the climb got harder with the Philadelphia Union besting NYCFC on a goal by Weston’s Alejandro Bedoya. If Inter ever needed their first win, it’s tonight.

Could it really be happening? Is it possible that MLS is just a mere hours from resuming play? It certainly is. While the bubble being built around the Swan & Dolphin hotels at the Walt Disney World Resort may have its fair share of headlines, MLS is pushing through. The #MLSISBACK Cup Competition begins tonight from Disney’s Wide World Of Sports Complex. Inter Miami and Orlando City are the headliners for today’s opening act. Unfortunately for Inter Miami’s “Familia”, these matches right up the road in Orlando remain behind closed doors.
