Miami United, playing in the 2020 Open Cup qualifying tournament under their U-23 banner, edged out Florida Soccer Soldiers 2-1 in an enthralling encounter at Orange Bowl Field, Ives Estates Park on Sunday evening.
In a name-perfect matchup Wednesday night, Florida Soccer Soldiers will host Coldstream Guards FC, a team made up of soldiers from the British Army’s Coldstream Guards.
“Our last few tours have consisted in and around Europe with our last one being to Cyprus last year,” a representative of the team said through Instagram earlier this week. “We thought, why not the states and we just couldn’t say no to Miami.”
The match comes just two days after Coldstream Guards FC faced Red Force FC at Tropical Park. Red Force won that match, 4-2.
The Soccer Soldiers match will kick off at 8:30 p.m. kickoff at Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah.

It was surprising and yet at the very same time it was not. The Florida Soccer Soldiers will get their second round match against the Charlotte Independence (USL Championship) in just a few hours. The UPSL heavyweights from the Magic City held their own against the NPSL champions Miami FC just a week ago. Flash forward six days later, and the Soldiers are looking to make a FC Christos style run in the U.S. Open Cup.
The matchup that fans of the lower leagues in South Florida have been wanting for the last year is finally here. Today is the day two of the finest teams in the state go toe-to-toe in a competitive game. A US Open Cup first round encounter that sees NPSL champions Miami FC against UPSL national finalists Florida Soccer Soldiers.
U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday that The Miami FC will host Miami’s Florida Soccer Soldiers in Round 1 of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition.
The nation’s oldest soccer tournament has long been a historic tradition that has allowed some of the country’s smallest soccer clubs to square off against the heavyweights. The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup began in 1914, long before the official pyramid was even thought of. The inclusivity of the tournament allowed many proverbial “David v Goliath” matches to take place. With the expansion of the professional pyramid over the years, fewer amateur and semi-pro clubs have had the ability to compete. The 106th edition may be one of the worst for the non-professional sides.

It was the most highly anticipated matchup of the UPSL Florida South Division season so far. Undefeated and untied Florida Soccer Soldiers faced off with undefeated and untied Miami Sun FC. The game that started with such excitement ended with such controversy, as Florida Soccer Soldiers scored off a contested corner and the Miami Sun FC complaints reached such a fever pitch that the referees called the match more than 20 minutes early.
