Megan Rapinoe to speak to University of Miami students in October

Megan Rapinoe

Fresh off claiming “The Best FIFA Women’s Player” award in Milan, the University of Miami announced Tuesday that women’s soccer star and social activist Megan Rapinoe will address the student body on Oct. 10.

As part of the “What Matters to U” series, hosted by UM student government’s Student Engagement Planning Agency, Megan Rapinoe will likely speak about her activities on the pitch (two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winner) and off (social activism, business investment and philanthropy).

This is the third “What Matters to U” speech. Science communicator Bill Nye and actor/comedian Ken Jeong spoke in Feburary and April 2019, respectively.

As a student event, tickets are only available for undergraduate, graduate, medical and law students of the University of Miami. More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.

It seemed like the dream start for Miami Hurricanes soccer on Thursday evening at the Music City Invitational in Nashville. Three minutes in, Gudrun Haralz worked past Vanderbilt goalkeeper Lauren Demarchi to put the Hurricanes up 1-0.

But a late capitulation to the Commodores left the Hurricanes down 2-1. A tight 1-0 victory over Lipscomb on Sunday was a nice consolation, but Miami Hurricanes soccer head coach Sarah Barnes and company must wonder what might have been.

The Miami Hurricanes start campaign in full force

The Miami Hurricanes soccer team kicked off their season with a bang tonight at Cobb Stadium. Miami dominated Saint Francis (PA) by a score of 6-0. After working out the kinks following a 0-3 loss to upstate UCF, the Canes came back and dominated Florida Tech on Monday 7-0. They got off to a hot start Friday night as well.

Miami lost 4 key players coming into 2017. Three key players in defense (Auld, Dal Pozzo, and McCarthy) tallied two goals and eleven assists in 2016. Nothing hurts this team more than losing striker Gracie Lachowecki who tallied eleven goals and three assists in 19 games last season. Miami didn’t seem to mind losing these key players in this showing.
