The American Premier Soccer League kicked off its fall season last weekend, with two powerhouses of the league facing off at Tropical Park Stadium as FC Kendall and Red Force FC fought to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The APSL changed formats before the start of the fall season, creating north and south conferences. All of its South Conference is based in Miami-Dade County, so there will be lots of opportunities for local rivalry.
FC Kendall, formerly known as Uruguay Kendall FC, drew first blood with a goal from AndrĂ©s Navas in the 18th minute. Red Force FC, a regular qualifier for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, equalized near the end of the first half with a penalty converted by Daniel “Zurdo” Gomez. The second half remained scoreless, and both teams settled for a point.
Next week, FC Kendall and Red Force FC both hit the road. On August 26, FC Kendall will head to Palm Beach County to face FC Jupiter, while Red Force will “travel” to play Leones FC Miami, a new entrant to the APSL and Colombia’s first soccer franchise to belong to a semi-professional league in the United States. While the club is based in Doral, the game will take place at Tropical Park Stadium.
